as a sr in high school (honors English).  When discussing the story, I - for the first time ever - gave my teacher my theory of 'what the author meant' in one of those vague, theoretical themes.

I forget what it was, but I'd thought it out, and it made sense to me.

I was told not, "Interesting theory, have you considered..." or "Could be, or maybe...", but, "You're wrong."

Haven't read a word of O'Connor since, thanks to that "teacher."

Maybe I'll give it another try.  :)

    •  Life is short, read for the fun of it! (0+ / 0-)

Its unfortunate that your teacher was so closed-minded. I'm of the post-modern school of thought that the reader literally brings content to the work - that the text or painting or whatever is like a toothy key that clicks into the grooves of your experience (or doesn't), and when you turn it, the combined mechanical result is unique and real.

Or, to put it another way, no-one has ever (or can ever) read the same thing as you, so don't let them tell you about what you've read.

Well - they call it post-modern... but I bet Heraclitus would agree with me.
