with the ideas and ideals of independence of thought, freedom from oppression for any kinds of beliefs held, and recognition that the playing field should be level for all players.  These are the ideas and ideals best protected by a democratic form of government.

The ideals of that kind of government, and of America are more closely aligned with the ideals of the Democratic Party, which identifies itself with the working person and personal liberty than with those of the Republican Party, which identifies itself with corporations and national defense.

Historically, Democrats are Jeffersonian and Republicans are Hamiltonian who started out calling themselves anti-Federalists, later Democratic Republicans (yes, Republicans) and finally Democrats.

Anti-Federalist Jeffersonian Republican Democrats -- what a mouthful!  Yet, their ideals were simple and exist in the Democratic Party today:

Faith in the virtue and ability of the common man and the limitation of the powers of the federal government.

Yes, that's right.  Limited government -- limit the power of government to interfere in the personal beliefs of the working man and in his ability to work and earn a decent living on a level playing field.

Today's Democratic Party expresses that historical vision in its Party Platform, Renewing America's Vision (pdf).
