  •  What is your scenario (none)
..for what's next.  Bushco is going to need more troops if the US is to remain in Iraq. What will allow them to get public support for a draft?
    •  I think hey will (none)
pull back and hunker down in Iraq and use the "elections" to let the country drift into whatever it will do.. but the bases and the pipelines will be guarded and continue to be guarded.

I see an "internal withdrawal" in Iraq, but not pulling out of the country. At least that is the only thing that makes sense from their position at this point.

Nobody will change America for you, you have to work to make it happen

      •  Makes sense (none)
...the hunkering down although it also makes them easily identifiable sitting ducks.  Haven't they been having trouble protecting the pipelines with 150,000 troops + private security? Be hard to think that they could do more with even less in a "hunkered down" scenario.

Clearly, something has go to give.  Whether hunker down will work remains to be seen. Hunkering down also doesnt protect the Saudis very well, and as time goes on they need more, not less protection.

Hmmm - thanks Mitch for your wonderful, thorough piece...I have learned a great deal and look forward to more.

      •  Actually (none) I think about it, allowing Iraq to fall into chaos gives the US more cover to hunker down while the factions tear themselves to pieces they are probably less likely to target the US alone. A denuded, crushed Iraq is perfect for us to control - if it becomes miserable enough, a huge refugee problem out of Iraq ties down the Iranians, Syrians and Jordanians who either must restrict the refugees or allow them in to their already stressed countries. In the meantime, we reinforce our hold on the country and the oil. Yeah, I can see it.  Of course, the longer we are there, the more committed we get to STAYING there and subsequent administrations whether republican or democrat won't much matter. Hmmmm
