But the war was sold and launched in 2001.

Its really easy to search the NY Times archives. Here are all the articles with both the words "women" and "afghanistan" that appeared in the NY Times between 9.11.01 and 10.12.01 (when U.S. forces first engaged Al-Qaeda in combat).

        First paragraph, second result:

GULBAHAR, Afghanistan, Oct. 2— Here, at least, they can ride in the back of trucks if a man deigns to let them. They can shop in the market, although they are allowed to speak to male shopkeepers only if it is absolutely necessary. And they can go to school, even if the list of professions they can choose from is small -- teacher, for instance, or midwife.

Five days before SOCOM even arrived, according to Kill Bin Laden, the book written by one of the Delta officers given the eponymous task. An interesting read, by the way... the author backs-up Kerry's assertion that we didn't get Bin Laden because #1 the Bush administration wanted a photo-op wherein the Afghanis got him, and #2 the Afghanis we worked with were pathologically corrupt and double-crossed us.

I remember the invasion of Afghanistan being justified in part as "the first war for women's rights," based on the proposed liberation of Afghan women from the Taliban.  I don't know whether it was ever mentioned in the NY Times (which I recall being pretty screwed up at the time) and alas I do not have access to Nexis.

I replied to the wrong comment, sorry for the confusion. I think women's rights and more broadly civil rights was clearly one of the several issues used to sell the war.

      •  I'm not going to do your leg work. (0+ / 0-)

The case was rather clearly made that Afghanistan was a vengeful response for 9/11, with "human rights" being an afterthought. The speeches of the POTUS at the time are all but clear on that.

To insinuate that this mucking around the globe, beginning with Afghanistan, was/is primarily for human rights is foolhardy... especially in the face of some of the worst human rights abuses in history committed by the nation supposedly fighting for "freedom and human rights".

        Rubbish.

        •  Find the word "primarily" in my statement on the (0+ / 0-)

subject.  That's your assertion, so it's your legwork.
