awhile ago that maybe there's some sort of dementia issue with him and that's why he flipped out, but I think it was just money. He realized he could win lawsuits against unsuspecting victims.

get to pick one?  I say he's insane AND greed driven.  Even when he did what appeared to be good work on the surface (civil rights law) it only lasted as long as it took for him to find an angle to exploit.  He has been absolutely terrorizing law enforcement and local court systems for decades.  Which is one reason why he gets away with so much.  They avoid ANY entanglements with him like the plague.   But in all fairness, most of the public had never even heard of him or his church until it involved the military funerals and the MSM decided to report on it.  The masses are led around by the corporate approved propganda on the MSM to a much larger degree than most people care to acknowledge.  It doesn't mean that they wouldn't care about other issues given the opportunity.

        •  I disagree. (6+ / 0-)

He's been talked about on the NYT and WaPo and he's been on CNN and more since 1998. Fox had even had him on at the beginning of his protests of soldiers. They've gotten a ton of publicity.

He has been in the news off and on over the years and while many people have seen one or two of the previous stories there was never a continuing narrative designed for the public to follow.

Probably the biggest exposure was during the coverage of the Mathew Shepherd murder.  Many people will have some memory of his involvement in that story and while they found his behavior appalling, they went on with their lives assuming that since it was reported it was also being dealt with.  Same with the new appalling story on the news the next day and the day after that.

So even if they had seen other stories about this group before, the connection wouldn’t necessarily be made that it was the same person.  We get crazy person, hard to believe stories every day.   Even now with more mainstream attention and more people aware of this group, many who remember the Mathew Shepherd story and felt equally outraged by it, still have no idea that this is the same person and that he has been continuing this shit all along.  That may be hard for you to believe or understand, but I guarantee you, it is true.

Of course GLBT’s along with their families and loved ones took much greater notice of the pattern and story from the beginning because it automatically registered on a personal level.  Just like most people walking down the street have never heard of that crazy Orley Tatz (sp) woman – but I’ll bet most lawyers have.   Groups of astronomers are still seething over the big Pluto controversy, written about and reported  all over the place, yet you would have a hard time finding a random majority of people in the grocery store who could explain what the controversy is about.  I guarantee you right now you could find more people on the street who could tell you what state “The Bubble Boy” lives in than could tell you what state militias were raided this weekend.

Most people are not political activists and do not have the time or energy to spend researching assholes and/or issues which do not directly involve some aspect of their daily survival.   This country is set up that way.  Most working adults (especially those raising kids) are under constant pressure, overworked, overextended, overfed, over-stimulated by never ending marketing scams and overhyped propaganda campaigns, and just plain tired.  Most are not either hateful bigots or peace protesters.  The greater majority of people are simply trying to live peaceful lives and keep up with the overwhelming requirements to just run their own household.   They care about their fellow human beings and will typically react with compassion and generosity when confronted by a need.

You make a very valid point about the double standards and discrimination, but it's not the masses who have wanted it this way.  So much is manufactured outrage in this country and always has been.
Just like we have seen with the teabaggers. I don't believe the haters are not as numerous as they are reported to be nor is the majority as uncaring or unreachable as you might imagine them to be.

    •  Maybe that's why (8+ / 0-)

Bill O'Reilly is paying the Snyders' $16,500?

My head is exploding at the thought that Billo might do something, once in his life, that is not disgusting and reprehensible.  What's this about?

that Phelps is no supporter of Gore anymore?  Once Gore made it clear that he did not share Phelps's homophhobia, Pehlps angrily denounced him.
