    but it kills me that there are still kids who are all of eleven years old committing suicide either because they're gay or because their peers call them gay.  Things may have gotten better, but to me, even one dead kid is way too many.

      It's a continuum, with too many tragedies along the way.

      A few years ago, I was driving a field trip of second graders, I think. On the way, one of the girls started talking about X being gay, they're so gay, etc.

      I pulled off the highway, and told her, and all the kids, in no uncertain terms, that such language was unacceptable, and that it wasn't going to happen in my car. I told her, and them, that some people are straight, some people are gay, and that's just how nature is, and that one is no better than the other. As I pulled back onto the freeway, I told them that they should talk to their parents about it, and that if anyone wanted to talk about it further, they should give me a call.

      Didn't hear a word back.

      But I at least can hope that one kid, or a friend of one kid, will be more warmly embraced.
