We were firing back at the Republicans inside 24 hours? Before we were losing because we weren't just giving the Repubs the first move, but the second and third. We need to give them just enough rope to hang around their neck. We can't attack a proposal that hasn't been proposed, and we can't just attack them because they're in the majority.

We give them the first move, let them walk out on the branch, and then we cut it off.

I want to think that we've got them where we want them, but a decade of losing makes me cynical.

As for a specific proposal, we've known for months that Bush wants to bring out a Social Security plan that demolishes it by taking a portion of SS and transferring it to the stock market in a 401k-like way.  Honestly, I couldn't tell you right now what the administration's specific plan is, but we know they want to reallocate a significant amount into the private sector and boost the stock market.  It's fundamentally changing insurance, a guarantee for the future, to investment, which is inherently more risky and prone to failure.

And we've known for years that Bush is taking away taxes from Social Security, then claiming that Social Security is going to shrivel up and die.  (Well, duh.  It's obviously going to die if you're taking all the money away!)  But where are the Democrats with the big media campaign saying that George W. Bush wants to kill Social Security, take away our insurance, and give our money to his corrupt Enron/WorldCom friends in Wall Street?

I'm still waiting for us to play dirty and play to win.  This is our issue and our baby and I think we can set the terms of what Social Security should be.  I don't think we should be waiting at this point.
