I didn't know it, nor did I need to since common sense tells me that smuggling drugs is illegal.  I did know that violating American law in America can get immigrants deported but I couldn't have told you which law said it.  I do know that there have been many cases in local and national news where immigrants have been deported for committing felonies.

who is trained in the law, and who you have no choice but to trust to provide you with accurate advice, told you "there is no way you will get deported as a result of this", you wouldn't take that seriously?

Would still be a minor consideration if I knew I was guilty of smuggling drugs into the US.  I definately wouldn't expect my lawyer to know as much about immigration law as I would expect him to know about criminal law.
