My kids had the opportunity to choose between a few high schools here in Lincoln, Nebraska.  They chose Lincoln High for a number of reasons.  It had a great music program, which mattered to them.  It was all right to be smart there, which also was important.  It was also the most diverse school in the city, and since they had spent a semester during their middle school years in a class of "German as a second language" class in Berlin, that mattered.  In Berlin they had been two of four European/Caucasian kids in a class of seventeen, most of whom were refugees from war zones in Africa or from Iraq or Iran.  At Lincoln High, they encountered refugees from Bosnia, Somalia, Sudan, and lots of children of Vietnamese and Hmong refugees of an earlier era.  What I loved about their experience in Berlin and their experience here is that they developed an intolerance for intolerance, which has served them very well.
Congratulations to the teachers, the principal and, especially, the students from Gunn High.  Long may they prosper, love and accept.
