My mother is really young to be the mother of a 36 year old. She's about the same age as Madonna or Keith Olbermann. Her gen was caught in the middle of the free love and teh AIDS. She moved back to her hometown in upstate NY and many of the people she knew as a teen when I was born died of AIDS or perished somehow because of crack.

AIDS. The parents on the street would gather on front porches and talk about it. I was only 8 years old. I thought I would die a virgin in a nuclear winter fallout before I turned 17.

Gawd, yes, it was depressing. I used to have nightmares. I would be outside playing and someone would say a trigger word that made me think about nuclear bombs. All the energy would drain from my body instantly and I would go sleep under my bed all afternoon. I never told anybody how I felt. I didn't hear the term "nuclear anxiety" until I was grown up and all that was over.

The fundamentalists messed with my head as well. What they were saying about the Rapture and Armageddon was all wrapped up in the cold war in my mind. It seemed too plausible that we were going to die.

Remember the songs from that time? 99 Luftballons, Crazy Train, 1999. Every other song was talking about the cold war. I guess I wasn't the only one. Thank gawd. I thought I was losing my mind sometimes. We weren't talking about shell bombs and terrorism. We were talking about the earth...gone. Cockroaches left. (shudder)
