  •  Obama's false statement on offshore drilling (7+ / 0-)

As far as I can tell no one has reported this... or called out Obama out on this statement either here or anywhere that I can find after extensive searching.

    April 02, 2010:

    Via The White House:

    During the Q&A

I don’t agree with the notion that we shouldn’t do anything.  It turns out, by the way, that oil rigs today generally don’t cause spills.  They are technologically very advanced.  Even during Katrina, the spills didn’t come from the oil rigs, they came from the refineries onshore.  -- President Obama

Hurricanes Destroyed 109 Oil Platforms: US Government

Rita accounted for most of the damage in a region that ordinarily produces nearly one-third of US crude oil imports, Interior Secretary Gale Norton said in presenting a preliminary assessment report.

Rita destroyed 63 platforms and one drilling rig when it tore through the region on September 24, she said. Katrina destroyed 46 platforms and four drilling rigs when it hit the Gulf at the end of August.

Katrina also caused extensive damage to another 20 platforms and nine drilling rigs. Rita seriously damaged 30 platforms and 10 drilling rigs.

McCain and the Safety of Offshore Drilling

The hurricanes totally destroyed 113 oil rigs, according to the government's Minerals Management Service, and damaged 457 pipelines. The resulting oil spills were large enough to be seen from space, according to several reports.

A review by the Houston Chronicle reported that the two storms in the summer of 2005 caused 595 oil spills that released an estimated 9 million gallons of oil into the gulf, much of that from oil storage facilities on the shores. The government said there were a total of 146 small oil spills in federal waters caused by the storms.

If Obama believes his statement was true, that may explain his thinking. However the fact remains that Obama had his facts completely wrong and needs to be called out on this myth.

with hurricanes in mind.  The abandonment procedures include subsea shut-off of all production and dispacement of any stored oil.  I don't doubt almost all of the oil spilled came from refineries (state-regulated) and coastal pipelines (also state-regulated if within three miles of the coast, unless designated intrastate).

      •  Yes much of it did come from the pipelines, (3+ / 0-)

and storage facilities... both wouldn't exist without offshore oil rigs. It's a network.

True that most of the valves had been sealed. That doesn't change the fact that there was over 9 million gallons of toxic petroleum released.

A portion of that came from the rigs/platforms themselves.

is very important to the economic well-being of the US.  We can aim for non-fossil fuel energy development and strive to make it the primary source of energy, but we can't discount fossil energy production for the near future (and what "near" means I have no clue).
