There's a difference between an embryo, a bunch of cells without a nervous system, and a foetus who has a working brain, who moves and reacts to the touch of its's mother's or father's hand through it's mother's flesh. And there us  continuity (as well as change!) between life before birth and life after birth.

Many people of both sexes would make a difference between abortion in the 1st case, and in the 2nd case. It doesn't have to be based on religion, it can be based also on a parent's experience or on scientific findings about the cognitive competence of a foetus.
