Hoplophobia Resembles Homophobia, Right Here on Daily Kos.  As MB pointed out in the comments at the time:

    I am anti-NRA and pro-gun ... (3+ / 0-)

...(I own several) and I would never in a zillion years compare prejudices against gun owners with homophobia. It is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off base and offensive, in my opinion, although I think the author did not intend to offend.
I refuse to accept "no can do" as a proper slogan for progressives.

I can't even believe that some people would equate the two.

What's more disappointing is that it got 18 recs.

Shadan7, labwitchy, Kimball Cross, kestrel9000, happy camper, OMwordTHRUdaFOG, ER Doc, Kentucky Kid, Lady Kestrel, MKinTN, VA Classical Liberal, oldpunk, Wordsinthewind, Aristodemus, KVoimakas, PavePusher, Merry Light, theatre goon

I'm glad to see MB step in and say what he said.

      •  Again, not equate. nt (0+ / 0-)

Look at the title of the diary. If you're going to rec something like that, let your rec speak for itself. IMO, defending it by parsing makes it just seem all that worse.

The diary sums itself up with a bolded statement:

The pathological insistence on smearing us, and insulting any logic we may offer, resembles the behavior of the common homophobe.

Trying to make them equivalents is just flat immoral and denigrates the challenges gay and lesbian people have dealt with for years.

I could give it a pass I suppose, as momentary insensitivity. But, judging by your recs of personal attacks in this diary alone, I don't see that.

You can never let anything speak for itself.

            The facts speak for bullshit.

            The rec speaks for bullshit.

If I agree with it (the comment or the diary) to a certain extent, I'll rec it. And I'll explain myself when asked (or even before) if it seems like it shouldn't be rec'ed.

Conflating hatred of gays and hatred of guns is indefensible, imo.

              •  It's not hatred of guns and hatred of gays (1+ / 0-)

              •  you need to actually read the conversation (0+ / 0-)

                in the diary.

It's a good one and points out both the bad and the few good points in the comparison.

The Author even updated at the top of the diary and apologized and attempted to clear up his admittedly muddy and poorly articulated point.

imo hoplophobia is more similar to arachnophobia while homophobia is not a phobia at all but a pathology more similar to racism or anti antisemitism than any other phobia. Ther may be a small element of fear but it's more hate.

Anti gun people come in a few flavors. Hoplophobes who truly do have an unreasonable fear of firearms, controllers whose agenda is obvious as well as well intentioned but just misinformed people attempting to make a difference.

group 2 is the one dangerous to all our freedoms, not just the 2nd amendment.
