    •  Nope. Obama has veto power. GOP needs 66 votes. (1+ / 0-)

Senate will likely be GOP 51 (including Lieberman) vs. Democrats 49 (including Sanders).

That leaves Democrats able to defend health care, climate change, SS refunding...all kinds of good stuff IF they are smart enough to pass it.

Democrats should have gone for 50 vote solutions and then defended them with veto.

Ironically, had Democrats gone for 50 vote solutions on health care, climate change, Wall Street regs they would likely have remained in majority.

Too late for that now, but they can put in place balanced budget, climate change etc. that they could defend over next two years of GOP Congress.

      •  And what about the next President? (1+ / 0-)

Do you remember just a couple of years ago when the GOP occasionally threatened us with the "nuclear option" and we freaked out about how awful that was? Now we want to do it ourselves?

I'm all for fighting back harder against filibusters--by making them actually filibuster, for a start, or maybe by putting forth the decreasing cloture threshold some have suggested--but it's not as though ditching the filibuster is something we can  do without there being consequences.

        •  No worries. GOP kills filibuster next GOP prez (2+ / 0-)

Exactly how did Democratic Filibuster prevent $15T GOP debt, WMD/Iraq war disaster, record oil imports, record industrial decline, right wing Supreme Court, record greenhouse gases, Wall Street bank disasters from S&L to Great Recession, looting of Social Security, $2T in Medicare Cuts?

Democrats live in such fear that when out of power, the don't use the filibuster to protect the nation, when in power they don't over ride the filibuster to serve the nation.

Not to worry. GOP will kill the filibuster next GOP prez. The used the threat of killing filibuster to make cowardly Democrats not use it in Bush years.

          •  I see. (0+ / 0-)

So what exactly makes you think they'll kill it next time when they didn't last time? Especially now that they know how volatile any majority they get is likely to be? And how useful the filibuster was to them as the minority?

As to what the Dem filibuster prevented: How about Justice Harriet Meyers?

        •  Who is the "WE" kemosabe? (0+ / 0-)

What if they would have done it?  Think about what would have happened this year?

    •  Exactly....let's wait until they win the (0+ / 0-)

Senate and watch them show Democrats how to actually use a majority...
