  •  Misdemeanors are crimes that (0+ / 0-)

can call for a jail sentence.  A violation can be criminal or not.  In Massachusetts, there are both criminal and civil traffic and registration matters.  The threat of jail for a plate violation sounds like the judge had an early golf date.  Pay or jail without an opportunity to contest, even for a civil offense is illegal.  And the admission of a ticket as a business record will not stand up to due process claims.  And the testimony of a defendant would, in a fact matter be stronger than a piece of paper.  However, as there were no factual matters in dispute, the court acted poorly with the threat.  Lower fines are (or were before the Great De sorry Re session, where the judges continued salary may be dependent on fine revenue) routine.

Patriotism may be the last refuge of scoundrels, but religion is assuredly the first.
