WWE pro-wrestling routinely beats ESPN in head-to head ratings - does that make pro wrestling somehow more credible than sports where the outcome isn't scripted

Beck is a failed morning DJ doing an act, the people that see his show as anything other than schtick are on par with those wrestling fans that insist it is real

    •  Personally, I find art more credible than sports (0+ / 0-)

So I don't agree with your analogy, but I do agree with your views on Beck.

      •  unlike a play- wrestling fans think it's real (0+ / 0-)

it's not that scripted outcomes are a bad thing, it's that if your success depends on fooling your audience into thinking it is NOT scripted- that's where the comparison is.

        •  Not really. (1+ / 0-)

That used to be the case, years ago. That was when the wrestlers were required to maintain their facades in every medium, and keep their real lives extremely private. These days, the majority of wrestling fans are perfectly aware that the outcomes are scripted and that it's an entertainment show, not a full-on athletic competition. The stars will break character and do "backstage" interviews, sometimes in the same show or magazine that's describing the main ("in-character") action and events.

And even in the old days, most still knew it wasn't real, just like when they'd go watch an action movie and yell at the screen.  All fiction requires suspension of disbelief.

    •  it makes pro "wrestling" more pertinent (0+ / 0-)

because the difference between that and current political discourse is becoming smaller by the day.
I didn't know that little datum, but it's telling.

The Republican Party will never die until there is a new political home for racists.

      •  wrestling VS ESPN ratings (0+ / 0-)

Wrestling does better generally, but not in certain instances, like high-profile, late-season baseball games and big-name college football matchups.
