the Tea Party movement being one of middle-aged and old white people who are primarily vote Republican.

I'm finding the summary of the survey very confusing, though.

Among whites who approved, 35 percent said they believe blacks to be hardworking, 45 percent said they believe them intelligent and 41 percent said they believe them trustworthy.

Are these figures lower than for whites in general or conservatives in general? Were they asked if they believe whites are hardworking, intelligent and trustworthy?

Whites who disapprove of President Barack Obama, the survey found, are 55 percent more likely to support the tea party than those who say they approve of him.

Isn't this what you would expect for a Democratic President regardless of race?

I'm sure if they published the detailed results this would be clearer, but the summary is a not very enlightening jumble of inferences.
