    I wasn't referring to what they will do on the court; I was referring to how long they will be on the court. I too wish Obama would choose a more liberal justice and am sure I will be disappointed, yet I am glad Stevens is leaving now because I'd rather have the left of center justice now than risk that Stevens will leave on a Republican's watch.

      before the end of Obama's term. Your comment is nonsensical because I am trying to understand how you think it is a response to the ideological or leadership issue. The answer is that it isn't an answer,a nd your response confirms that. It is just an answer to what you feared rather than what liberals should be seeking

        If Stevens hadn't announced his retirement, he might live through 2013 and we could have a Republican presidency. The question I am addressing is whether it would be better to have a court going forward with an 89 liberal or a 50's center-left justice. I would say I would much rather have the 50's center-left justice.

        I am not disagreeing that Stevens is a better justice than who will be appointed and that the court in the short term will likely move to the right so I'm not disagreeing with you about ideology or leadership; I never was.
