    Even if they're not paid, they probably need to have at least a few staff members.  If the budgets are being cut but adding school board members costs something, argument could be made that additional appointed school board members means fewer teachers.
    As a parent of a school-aged child, almost nothing makes me madder than money from the education budget spent on foolishness rather than on teachers.

    If, in our efforts to win, we become as dishonest as our opponents on the right, we don't deserve to triumph.

      whether Board members are paid or not.

      But, for example, our superintendent spends some amount of his time, maybe an hour or two per month per trustee, in briefing school board trustees. If there are 9 to brief instead of 5, that would take some time away from say, observing classrooms.
