  •  Since the Republican Conservatives have long (8+ / 0-)

been unable to privatize our public school system through the legislature or the ballot box, they are doing everything they can to make public school education so poor that parents will demand the right to pull their children out and send them to private schools.  Every time they destroy a union, stack a school board (as they are trying to do in San Diego) or sell off public schools to private businesses (as they are doing in LA) they weaken our public schools.

Republican parents like the public schools, they appreciate them because a lot of them CAME from the public school system.  A lot of Republicans are not rich and can't afford private schools.

They don't get that this is one of those untouchables right now because the schools are still working for a lot of their kids!

... the free market system. If the public schools are really bad, the private schools don't have to be all that great either. They only need to be seen as a better alternative to public school. In most cases, they are not better, they just market themselves better than the public schools do.

The main reason people think they're better is that they use a restrictive admissions system. They only take good students. So their test scores look good, and people think it's because they are doing a good job of teaching. From what I've heard, if you equalize for socioeconomic status and special ed issues, the public schools tend to outperform the private ones.

in the way that public schools must answer to the state.  Private schools don't have to worry about their students passing the tests that students must take in most (all?) states.
