excellent diary, I'd suggest that Sarge's best accomplishment was as the first director of the Peace Corps.
And, though she never held public office herself, Alice Roosevelt Longworth, daughter of Teddy, wife of the Speaker, was the doyenne of Wahington politics for many years. My favorite quote from her is "If you haven't got anything good to say about somebody, come over here and sit by me".

I had a brother at Khe Sanh, fightin' off them Viet Cong, they're still there, but he's all gone. The Boss

But I'd guess if you asked people what Sargent Shriver did (and ignored everyone who said, "who?" or "he's Schwarzenegger's father-in-law"), they'd remember that he was McGovern's running mate. You're right, though, being the first director of the Peace Corps was awesome. So was starting the Special Olympics.

Incidentally, he's still alive, but he has Alzheimer's. Maria Shriver wrote a book for kids called "What's Happening to Grandpa?"

Listen, strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

She also famously described Calvin Coolidge as looking as if he was "weaned on a pickle" -- which always comes to my mind whenever I see Brit Hume.
