enough and has enough time to find out who is a good doctor and has the best price and then arrange it...all while you're writhing on the floor from a heart attack.

        •  Common... (0+ / 0-)

obviously we are talking about non-emergency situations where there would be some benefit in finding the best cost/quality combination...

For instance my wife negotiates with her chiropractor all the time...that is what people are referring to...don't make this into a hyperbolic argument to the extreme...

          •  And what % of health care is that? (0+ / 0-)

I'm a health care professional and a health care educator.
The negotiating for health care is a red herring. In reality, there is little in terms of cost drivers that this would affect. The most high cost items are those spent in situations where this would not be possible. For example, a large part of our health care dollars are spent in keeping grandma alive in the ICU for an extra day or two. 50% of spending on medications goes to profit, marketing, and admin expenses, no value added whatsoever.

            •  There have been diaries... (0+ / 0-)

from HCR naysayers that the price charged for an MRI can go from a couple of hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars...

To say that by having good information about cost and quality measures and making sound choices that consider cost is not a red herring and is included in HCR...

Even your example, there are ICUs and then there are Hospices that can make granny comfortable in her last days at a much lower cost...

Is this the silver bullet that will make Healthcare completely affordable...no but every little bit helps when the dollars are so huge...

Just imagine if every person in this country saved $100 per year by being better consumers of non-emergency healthcare?  That would be about $30 Billion per year in savings...
