Once again, K-love, you simply didn't get around much. It's OK, but that's what it's like being a tourist. I have made my living as a travel writer most of my adult life. I know drive-by impressions when I see them.

I live in one of the more urban areas of Boise, very  working class. In the four houses between my house and the corner, my family is the only white family. There are two black families and one Asian family. There were some Latinos on the other side of us, but a white family's there now. Boise is a major refugee resettlement area and is getting more diverse all the time. We also have growing numbers of black professionals who've moved here to work for HP, Boise State, etc.

Boise is cleaner than many cities. But I see litter on my street every day. I see dreadlocked kids and street people nearly every day. Next time you're here, try the Flying M or Eyes of the World Imports or the international strip on Orchard Streetif you want to see the real Boise. Be sure to check out the Idaho Black History Museum, too. Yes, really.

Sarah Palin was from North Idaho, which truly is a very white place. But it's 500 miles from Boise.
