  •  Even when back in power, they have no interest in (29+ / 0-)

governing. ANd very little aptitude for it

This was not true of earlier Republicans, such as Eisenhower or even Nixon, who was corrupt but not incompetent. The neo-cons are incompetent. Bush/Cheney and their crew were stunningly incompetent. It's shocking that the Republicans still have as much support as they do, given the mess they made of everything they touched.

    •  Yes, but (5+ / 0-)

when their platform is based on government being unable to do anything, being incompetent actually helps them stay in office.

      •  The Problem Is More Than Just Incompetence (9+ / 0-)

I think the problem is the core Republican philosophy that government is "the problem".  I feel it should go without saying that when you have people in charge of the government who believe that the government is "the problem" and isn't able to do anything right, then it shouldn't come as a surprise when those same officials take actions that make us question the efficiency or ability of our government and it institutions. It really becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy in my mind.  Those who think government can't solve anything take actions to bring that about.

I don't believe that the problems stemmed from just incompetence on the Republicans part.  Rather I believe that the Bush Administration along with the Tea Party movement are, hopefully, the last gasps of a coordinated decades long effort to sour Americans on the idea of government being able to effect positive change in our society.

In short, when people who hate the government are the ones actually running the government, the government is not going to be run well at all.  And that's just the way those people want it.

        •  The Republicans believe that the government (7+ / 0-)

should aid business by either helping them or stepping out of the way.  Tax cuts and free money to business is good and helpful as is repealing legislation that imposes any kind of rules on the behavior of business.

Essentially they do not believe that the government is there to aid people, and since the New Deal, it has been a stumbling block to the business world. All of that belief is demonstrably false but they want to believe it so badly that it has become truth to them.  Modern Republicanism of the conservative variety is nothing less than an attempt to justify greed and make sure wealth is concentrated into the fewest hands as possible.  Corporations love the stability that governments create (which is why China is a good place to build a factory but Somalia is not), however, they continue to push for things that undo the stability because they want to maximize short-term profits. This why the Democratic party needs to stop playing footsie with the corporations and set the boundaries that the Republicans would never set, that corporations don't want, and yet everyone would benefit from.

    •  Nixon was corrupt, but he was also heavy (0+ / 0-)

      on the smarts.

    •  I remember reading an article written by (1+ / 0-)

Steve Benen last year in which he said that during the 8 years under the GWB Administration, the republicans had become lazy because GWB would tell them what he wanted, they'd craft the legislation, pass it, and he'd sign it.  Benen also said that this was a pattern of behavior with them and was probably what was behind their constant refrain last year for President Obama to, "Slow down, you're moving too fast!"

    •  I don't think it's incompetency. (0+ / 0-)

I wish I did. I think it's a combination of the attitude that Crazycab214 describes very ably, plus a strong dose of cynicism and amorality on the part of a very few well-placed people, specifically the Cheney family. Dick Cheney made out like a bandit at the expense of the federal government, both before and during his administration.

While I think he is also quite crazy, especially w/r/t foreign policy, I do not think he's a true believer in the Reaganite philosophy, except insofar as it can be leveraged to his personal advantage.

    •  They were NOT incompetent! (0+ / 0-)

They were corrupt.  They got away with everything they really wanted to.  They and their cronies looted the economy and got away with it. They did not care about the rest of the country.

Competency in government was never one of their goals.  Power and money without being busted were.

Torture is for the weak. After all, it is just extended wheedling.
