fact that the Church runs everything and competes with the Princes of Europe for power and resources - also not an ideal Libertarian fantasy.

Maybe the closest you'll get to a Libertarian fantasy land is Genghis Khan: http://en.wikipedia.org/... , but even then it's an open question whether or not he would have been pure enough for a modern day teabagger.

Just how strong was the church during the dark ages?  It had some moral power and some influence on petty kings but civilization was on the retreat during the dark ages.  The church really didn't have the power of armies till the crusades.  The inquisition was even later IIRC.

I thought the many mailed fists of the biggest armies led by short lived, competing petty tyrants was by far the dominant force during the dark ages-well beyond the power of the church.

...but if you look at all business being vested under the power of the grant and royal decree (I'm assuming that was still the deal in the dark ages) it was still far from the Libertarianland that the ideologues pine for ;-)

I don't think there were many powerful kings during the dark ages in Europe.  Much of Europe was divided in very small unstable tribal type regions.  Much migrating and shifting of populations.  Lots of raiding and pillaging of neighbors.  Very unstable period with law of the jungle as the primary basis of survival.  At least that is my impression.
