  •  Libertarians, would, I think (0+ / 0-)

    include those on their list..

But it is still quite different than taking ownership of a manufacturer... if only in degree.

Union Pacific Railroad, transportation company chartered (1862) by Congress to build part of the nation's first transcontinental railroad line.

Not really so very different at all - maybe by only less than 1/2 a degree.

    •  "Ownership" of automobile companies (7+ / 0-)

We bailed GM out of their latest financial trouble in exchange for stock as a means of securing the taxpayer's "loan" to GM.  Technically, that makes us "owners" by virtue of the stockholding.  I think intent matters here.  It was not, in my opinion, the intent of Barack Obama, or anyone in his administration, to take over ownership of GM.  It was merely an attempt to secure the interests of the American people.

At least that's what I think.

      •  Intent doesn't matter (4+ / 0-)

In bailing out GM the administration has denied other better run auto manufacturers from stepping up to fill in the gap. Ford is a much better managed company but they have been denied the opportunity to fill the gap of GM leaving the stage.

The only interests that have been protected are managements, shareholders, and the unions. The American people got hoodwinked.

That really puts a different light on it for me.  Thank you.
