Then we're still screwed, even with a three-party system.

If that happens, we can only hope one side or the other comes to its senses and is willing to actually compromise and legislate with the majority. The Republicans are the best bet for this- I can see the furthest right shifting to a Tea Party, letting the GOP return to classical conservatism.

It's more likely, though, that the GOP will wither, and a moderate conservative party will fill in the gap. They'd probably be formidable- they'd be the party of all the displaced conservatives who are disgusted by the tea party, as well as conserva-dems and left-leaning moderates.

It may just lead to a die-off of both fringes, though, if too many moderate democrats convert.

If three viable political parties ever existed, it would shake up American politics quite a bit. Both the House and Senate might have to change a lot of rules- aren't the current set really geared towards having just a two-party system?

....a TP split serves to strengthen the Dems which, despite my criticism, I believe are infinitely better.

Good point on the rule changes. Yes, I bet you're right and a legacy of old-boy party-based rules would go out the window.

Of course, a third party that is manufactured to leverage some star candidate and play off of popular disgust with entrenched party politics can be very dangerous. Still, I have no fear of shake-ups...
