    I was listening to a bit of NPR this morning and this very subject came up. The point was made that, historically, trust in government was at its highest when the economy was doing well - particularly in the late 50's through the mid 60's.

    It still blows my mind though how people buy into the Republican mantra of distrust in government. A Republican candidate can't win unless s/he tells supporters that government sucks . . . but then wants them to vote him or her into office so they can prove that it sucks, by f***ing everything up.

    This is like my going to a job interview and telling the person interviewing me that I think his company sucks and if he'll give me the job, I'll do everything I can to f*** it up. Then, sure enough, I get the job and do, indeed f*** it up.

    Why on earth would anyone do that? I don't know the answer; you'd have to ask a Republican.
