I hate to make comparisons to fascists, but in this case I think it is appropriate. Long ago I read several political theorists and scholars (I will try to find the references and post them later) who theorized that fascists were able to subvert and take over the governments in Germany and Italy so easily and so completely because both German and Italian culture (throughout the early modern period into the twentieth century) had a very strong view of the role of the father as the ultimate head of the household who is not to be disobeyed, much like the Roman concept of pater familias.

This philosophy was extended to include the perception that the head of state was a father to the nation. As a result (according to these scholars) the ingrained obedience to the "father figure" caused the majority of the people in both countries to allow fascists to take over with a minimum of resistance.

While the analogy is not perfect, as Republicans only trust government if they are in charge, it is close enough as when Republicans are in charge they act as though the rest of the nation ought to be subservient to their rules as if they (Republicans/"Christian" Right/"Moral"[yeah right] Majority/ "conservatives" [who are anything but]/neocons/etc.) were collectively the father of the nation (as Bush said "If this were a dictatorship, it would be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I'm the dictator").

They want everyone to obey them, fear them, serve them and adore them, while they want that obedience and adoration without ever actually doing anything that helps the people; not their supporters (they only help the megacorps) and not their detractors.

I find the prospect of the "conservatives" being back in charge truly terrifying. Especially since they have deemed fit to unleash a whole new brand of divisive, aggressive and violent politics upon our nation. If they are ever back in charge it will be a dark day for our country.
