  •  Actually.... (6+ / 0-) grandfather was a doctor, in practice from WWI until his death in 1961.

    During the Depression, he did accept indeed 'payment' in the form of sacks of potatoes, produce, meat, and most memorably to his young boys, a pony.

    But this was only during the Depression, when there literally wasn't much money available.

    Another interesting side note is that his entire career he charged $2 for an office visit, and $3 for a house call. He prospered in the small town in Kentucky where he had his practice. Sent his sons to Ivy League college.

    That was back before many folks even had health insurance: there was no ubiquitous middle man to drive up costs in order to create profits for themselves.
