  •  We need to change people's attitude (10+ / 0-)

about voting, period. Instead of advocating for Saturday voting, we should push for a national holiday (or week) to vote. We should enforce the laws about punishing employer's who punish people who take time out to vote. We should enforce the idea that voting is a civic duty and as is poll work on election day. We need to stamp out all "id" laws that penalize poor and elderly people who can't obtain ID. We need to get private companies out of voting process and put in back into citizen's hands, media pressure for the instant verdict be damned. We need to stop punishing convicted felons once they have served their sentances. Great diary.

Oregon has the right idea with universal (?) mail voting.

I remember our former board of elections executive director, the unfairly maligned Michael Vu (everything bad that happened here in 2004 was engineered by the chairman of the board of the BOE, Bob Bennett, not so coincidentally alos chaiman of the Ohio Republican Party) talking about his memories of how in Vietnam, not only was Election Day a holiday but a real celebration. And Ohio just instituted an ID law after the 2004 election,  when  Republicans, panciked about the prospect of losing control of the state, were looking for new ways to disenfranchise people while they still controlled the legislature. This after the Ohio League of Women Voters documented — I can't remember if it was 4 or 5 — cases of voters fraud in the ENTIRE state in the previous six years. A solution looking for a problem, clearly. I have observed the result as a pollworker. Sixty precent of your time is taken up with ID check. It's pointless, confusing busywork.

As white as society, no more, no less.

That aside, though, there's absolutely no reason their voting rights should be suspended once their debt is paid.

    •  We should, simply, have a national holiday (0+ / 0-)

      every two years for voting.
