    Requiring prisoners to do some basic work (cooking, cleaning) within the prison: OK.

    Providing work experience opportunities, for which compensation is provided (either in the form of apprenticeship/training and certification in a trade, or in the form of a fair wage): OK.

    Requiring prisoners to do work that generates income for the prison or associated individuals/corporations: slavery and not OK.

      them to cook and clean, beyond keeping up their own cells.

      If a job pays a dollar a day, prisoners will line up for the chance to do it to break the monotony and get a little cash in their canteen.
