    it's complicated because you must look beyond what they do to the very structure of the culture.

    For example in Muslim countries in home family care of the elderly is a given.  Even if you are a rat bastard to you children they are expected to care for you in your old age.

    The exchange for that kind of security is that you give up much of the "individual self discovery and self fulfillment" and do what the head of the family tells you to do, right down to what occupation you will have.
