      My late grammie was one.

Well, she was sort of queen of the lunch ladies - she oversaw the school lunch program in my city for a while, about 60 years ago. She was a product of her times, so the menus probably wouldn't pass modern nutritional guidelines, but she did try to get more fish and chicken (and fewer processed meats) onto those menus, and she was a stickler for veggies and making sure kids drank milk instead of soda.

While I admire what Jamie Oliver was trying to do, I wonder if his effort might have been better served by adopting a large urban school system to experiment with? The numbers of kids impacted would have been much larger, and thus easier to quantify. If you can demonstrate impact on a large scale, it's more likely to be replicated in other communities.

When you try to change the way things are done at the programmatic level, it is beneficial to have some hard numbers and a large-scale working model system to point to (helps justify federal funding and sways school boards and state legislatures).

Nothing against WV (and it was probably chosen for logistical reasons, as representational of low-to-middle-income, small-town America in all it's bad eating habit glory), but can you take the results of his pilot experiment and "sell" it to LA, Chicago, Houston, NYC?

I'm sure the location was chosen for television programming reasons.  Alice Waters, however, is doing some great work with student gardens and edible classrooms that began in Berkley, CA and has been adopted in a few other cities,
