    Scientists and engineers stand on the borders between the known and the unknown, and the doable and the done, respectively.

    Knowledge is power.

    And power is also responsibility.  

    Ultimately we have to get to the point where science education is universally excellent, including math, and including probability & statistics.  And/or we have to start screening judicial and congressional candidates according to their education in those areas.  If they haven't even taken a few relevant undergrad courses, I'd say that's a disqualifier unless there is a serious reason to think otherwise.
