  •  I'm boycotting (17+ / 0-)

Changed airlines on a trip to the Bay area in a couple of weeks so I wouldn't stop over in Phoenix. Now flying Chicago to Seattle to Oakland.

    •  US Air has a major hub in PHX. I just sent them (6+ / 0-)

this letter, because I frequently have traveled with USAirways through PHX:

My wife and I frequently travel round-trip from ABC to XYZ... Despite the fact that USAirways has always provided us with excellent service, I am writing to let you know that with Arizona's horrendous decision to adopt as law the egregious, discriminatory, racist and xenophobic bill 1070, we no longer wish to have anything to do with the state of Arizona. We do not wish to pass through its airport, nor de we wish to have even a dollar of our money going there. We will henceforth be looking for an alternative way of traveling to XYZ, even if it is more expensive and less convenient. You should also be aware that our feelings about this are identical to millions of other Americans who do not want to be associated with hatred and bigotry and tactics that are chillingly reminiscent of fascism. You may wish to make known how Arizona's decision is going to affect the state's businesses, including USAirways. While your company most likely did nothing to participate in this coming about, you are now in the position of needing to be part of the solution to getting this fixed. Thank you very much.

My hard-working cousin, who's worked for USAir for years was laid off in January.  Isn't business lousy enough for the airline?  And like you said, it's likely they "did nothing to participate" in the law's enactment.  But my biggest question is:  WHY didn't USAir and other business interests express in the strongest terms why this law would be BAD for business in AZ.  It just makes no sense.  I don't recall hearing ANYTHING about concerns of commercial backlash prior to the governor's signature.

I lived in AZ when that fascist Evan Mecham was elected in 1986 over a Democratic female who I believe had been in Babbit's cabinet - perhaps LG.  And Mecham not only cancelled that MLK state holiday, it was his FIRST ACT as governor.  He had run for governor something like 5 or 6 times prior, and in '86, a third candidate - a so-called Democrat by the name of Schultz - entered the general election as an independent.  I don't believe Shultz was a candidate in the Democratic primary.  He just came out of nowhere and likely secured the seat for Mecham - a car dealer who never held elective office.

Republican Mecham was later impeached and removed from office for corruption.  But the damage he had done to AZ was severe and long-lasting.
