I think it's more that traditional latino heritage aligns more closely with actual social conservative ideas - not the hatemongering hiding under faux conservative ideals that we see elsewhere.

Republican Latinos, again, were some of the last remaining sane Republicans.  So again, the Republican party has purged itself of its own 'left wing', to become ever more crazy as a whole.

    •  Here's a test. I would love to see (0+ / 0-)

how they respond to immigration reform that is inclusive of gay couples and gay people in general. Do they toss gay people under the bus along with other social conservatives?

That polling would tell me whether they are truly inclusive or exclusive of  others.

Let me be clear, I think this Az laws is evil, but I also think denying gay couples the same rights is equal. There is no either/or in my mind. No opression olympics. The issue in my mind is to ascertain whether they are true Republicans in that they are concerned only with their own rights, and not so much those of others. Especially, when I read reports like this one:

      •  There are still plenty of white Dems who toss (0+ / 0-)

gays under the bus all the time.

And a lot of folks feel gays have been stuck in the back of the bus even by the current administration, so I don't know that that alone makes them any worse than lots of current Dems.

        •  Yes, but I am talking about this specific (0+ / 0-)

group because the diary is about this specific group. I know there are bigots all around. And, yes, it makes it worse when someone can go through something so heinous as this immigration law without seeing how their own bigotry is a problem. That's just in the nature of being aware from your own experiences of what bigotry can do.

        •  Let me add, the point is also about (0+ / 0-)

how un-Republican they are. I think of CA, and the CA voters were more liberal, even on prop 8 in the Latino , Chicano and Hispanic communities. So, that's why I asked
