of course everyone has their own taste. But the Spiegel isnt so much a news outlet as an opinion maker (wannabe). They spin that it makes me dizzy so I discarded them as safe news source long ago. in my experience/taste, more barebones daily print news is more reliable (and I mean barebones, not bareskin). So like the FAZ, SZ, also FTD, western ruhrgebiet papers (though those I dont know well). Zeit for more background. SZ was longtime the unrivalled liberal flagship of German daily press but they seem to have lost severely in quality in recent economic troubles. They may go under. That would leave the FAZ as the best quality paper in Germany, even though I hate their politics (which is bordering on the national-conservative).

There aren't a lot of German sources in English.

in short words, it describes that there is an orchestrated groundwave of anti-greek ressentiment building in Germany, at least among the popular base of the ruling right-wing conservatives. That ressentiment being actively pushed by an unrestricted boulevard press, and threatening to restrict the ability of the government (of D) to act according to technical necessity. It is a story of a teabaggeresque playing with fire (the conservatives thinking they can play political gain domestically by waking a xenophobic dragon, that dragon grows to consume them).

See not only the Spiegel can spin, I can as well!
