to support a gay rights referendum.  Just because I sign my name to a petition supporting gay rights does not mean that I am gay.  It just means I support equal treatment for all.

A desperate disease requires a dangerous remedy.

      •  You aren't clear on what you mean. (0+ / 0-)

So, you feel that gays who wish to support a gay rights referendum should be forced out of the closet, or forced not to express their support?

I'm not sure what you are saying.

Signing a petition says little about your own personal life, other than your political views.  People believe lots of things for lots of reasons.

        •  The point is that people face real consequences (0+ / 0-)

if their names are revealed publicly. That is an ethical consideration.

Doing so will reduce the chances of getting progressive initiatives on the ballot. That is a practical consideration.

Effective government by, of and for the people depends on making it easier, not harder, for citizens to participate in the process.

Requiring people to run a gauntlet to participate, whether literal or metaphorical, is not consistent with progressive principles. So, that is a principled consideration.

I fail to see a single way, except an ends justify the means form of hypocrisy and cynicism, that justifies the glee here that meets Scalia's reasoning.
