  •  An incompetent Democrat getting bailed out again (4+ / 0-)

I have mixed feelings on the Lowden 'chicken-gate'.

First and foremost I want more Democrats in the Senate, so I want Reid to win.

But Reid has been, at best, very poor at public relations (personally I think he's a bad leader, but that isn't even necessary for my point here).  He is unpopular because of his own incompetence and complete failure to understand what the electorate wants.

So what happens if he beats Lowden?  He, and his advisors, will take his election victory as vindication of his methods.  They will think they are doing it right.

Democratic consultants have proven a complete lack of ability to separate a victory on the merits and a victory handed to them by Republican idiocy.

So I worry that Lowden will just continue to bolster entrenched Democratic Party ideas and personnel.

I don't want him to lose.  But, I wish that if he wins he'd realize that it's a second chance to get it right.  Not proof he's been doing it right.

and are the only people who vote for Harry. We grow up a special sauce of wingnut here in the Mt.West, hell they are tossing Robert Bennett in my state 'cus he's too moderate.

Harry is trying to carry water for us in the Senate and get his ass reelected in Nevada. He has to walk a tightrope, so far he has succeeded by using a coalition of labor, minorities and Mormons (no small voter bloc in NV). Mormons and the Lowdens of the world are a perfect match along with conservative ranchers and mining interests.

We want progressive Harry, Nevada might not. If he can get his groups out to vote he can win, but remember that part of his group is naturally conservative but votes for him because of religion and familiarity. That's why he emphasizes his small town roots and history. I don't envy him in his position, but if anyone can do it Harry's the guy.

      •  I disagree (0+ / 0-)

I don't want 'progressive' Harry.  I want a Harry that stands up for what he thinks is right.  If those are moderate values, then fine, all I ask is that he fight for them in a competent matter.

He's unpopular in Nevada because his method of scrapping together this coalition isn't working.  He looks and sounds like a DC politician.  I'm sure that doesn't do well in the mt. West.

I think Paul Wellstone showed us that you can stand up strong for values in a moderate state and people will respect you for it.  If you meekly seek middle ground you just look weak and wrong, even on moderate issues.

I don't think that Harry is in trouble here for not being moderate. I think we ride his ass for being too moderate, we want more at least I do. But, Nevada is an unusual state with CA on one side and UT on the other, then there's ID and AZ. Paul Wellstone is a hero of mine, but he never would be elected out here.

Think of the spill over of voters and the percentage of sagebrush rebellion types. If Harry makes it through this election we will all be better off, the fact that he's still plugging along is a miracle brought about by the few bigger cities like Las Vegas and Reno/Tahoe and his coalition.

and no, it's not what everybody wanted, but still, he managed to do what no one has done for decades.

He'll go down in history for it.

And he's paying for it now. We should all have his back for what he did. Obama's poll numbers are where they are because Harry took the blows like the old boxer that he is.
