  •  people provide your plan for energy (0+ / 0-)

you are not going to find one better than nuclear even with it's draw backs.

    •  Almost all of them are better than nuclear (6+ / 0-)

In fact the only energy source that might be worse is coal.

My plan is a widely distributed combination of sources including wind, solar, carefully managed geothermal, conservation (we can improve efficiency in machinery, lighting, space heating and transport to the point that it would be like building a series of new plants).

There are other innovations that we haven't perfected yet. We don't have to cut back on our dreams - we have to get over using highly centralized, toxic and dangerous energy sources. Just like nuclear.

      •  are you sure you understand all the bad things? (0+ / 0-)

toxic chemicals are needed to make solar panels.  There may be weather effects with major wind farms.  Even florescent lights have a negative toxic manufacturing problem.  And you can say the exact same things about nuclear getting better with technology.  My feeling is there is a stigma with nuclear and it is preventing some people from considering it as an option.

        •  The only nuclear... (5+ / 0-)

... that might possibly make sense is thorium-based nuclear.  But I'd want to see a test thorium reactor up and running first.

          Uranium-based nuclear is a boondoggle.

          It is:

          risky on many levels
destroys the environment with uranium mining
          creates too much nuclear waste
is not insurable without taxpayers basically insuring it
          almost always exceeds projected costs
definitely does not help when you are trying to make an argument for nuclear non-proliferation
is not renewable, ie. based on a finite resource

        •  Yep, you nailed it. (3+ / 0-)

There is a stigma, for many reasons.
