  •  that's very interesting, say more.... (4+ / 0-)

Say more about the self-hate factor there.

Something to do with how a person thinks others view them?

I've had to chafe under the "involuntary simplicity" thing from time to time, but in the long run, one learns to improvise.  And also, at least in my social circle, people give each other pats on the back for clever improvisations & workarounds that save money & resources.

Also recall my point about coming up with clever come-backs to social pressure.  I'm a telephone systems engineer and I don't have a cellphone: I catch grief from my clients about this all the time, hence the "getting all the surveillance I need for my tax dollars" line.

    •  not sure how (4+ / 0-)

I earn a lot (compared to local standards) but I can´t do anything with it. So I tell my boss when he gives me a pay rise that I dont want that, that I want impact, not money. He looks as me as if I´m crazy (actually not "as if", you can see him officially thinking that), and you realize that you´ve just ensured that he´s going to do his utmost to prevent you getting impact, beyond what they strictly need you for, just because you´re so crazy as to not want money and having the weirdness of even saying so, which makes you deeply untrustworthy. You´re being put into a kind of fish-in-an-aquarium position by the people you deal with, and while its nice enough with folks you have no interest in, some of them you do have an interest in, and they don´t reciprocate if you don´t reciprocate their way of life. So, if youre in that village that Warren says, where conservation is an accepted thing, its far more easy to conserve. I´m fine enough with myself as an isolated island, but no man is an isolated island, that is not the way the human soul is structured, and if you look onto yourself from the outside, from where are you going to take the valuation that you´ll find is wanted by that soul? You can´t accept the "common" standard of valuation - because thats not what you are, then you could just as well go with the flow; so what standard do you take? By passing out of the common consent, you step on very shifting grounds.

      •  what i'd suggest is... (4+ / 0-)

Accept the pay raises, and partition the funds in your savings account, and then find some worthwhile project to support.

What to do with the funds depends on how much is available and when.  I would suggest letting it accumulate for a couple of years while you consider what kinds of projects or purposes could benefit significantly from whatever amount you're talking about.

As a generalization, it's good to increase income and reduce spending, and put the difference toward worthwhile purposes.  We're not trying to encourage people to forego their incomes; only to forego the kind of mad consumerism that's crashing the ecosystems and warping the culture.

Re. the common standard of valuation:

My standard of values is so deeply internalized that I couldn't shake it regardless of whether it was or wasn't supported by my peers.  But I'm also in a peer environment with similar values, which makes it easier than having to swim against the current all the time.  Yet in the places where I do swim against currents, somehow I still manage.   And I'm certainly no great example of anything, so if I can do it, almost anyone could.
