    I suspect the earnings are much like the high productivity figures: Companies have slashed workers concerned with longer-term production (R&D, etc), and thus have cut costs without having to cut output.

    Eventually they'll need to hire those people back to remain competitive, but for now they can get away with having cut them.

    Be nice to America. Or we'll bring democracy to your country.

      ...that's kind of the "cloudy" lining.

      While this is good news, my unscientific small-sample anecdotal (every other disclaimer you can think of) experience leads me to believe that worker productivity/utilization was going down, and now that business is better business is making more margin of the same labor/cost of goods sold.

      Hopefully if we keep trending up in productivity, we'll see some reverse-hockey-stick decline in unemployment.
