  •  Well ... (9+ / 0-)

at some point, it simply starts to make sense to retire earlier ... that is a calculation with each piece of equipment / technology / practice but, for example, it is most cost/energy effective to simply replace traditional bulbs with CFLs or LEDs rather than wait until they burn out

depreciacion is used for that purpose. Why not introduce green-based accelerated depreciacion?

      •  My perspective ... (5+ / 0-)

want to have massive impact within the commercial sector?

        1. Move energy / resource use to a then-year expense to a 3-year depreciation schedule.
        1.  Make "Platinum" LEED-like (Energy Star +25% / etc) investments immediately deductible.
        1.  Make Silver/Energy Star +10% a three-year depreciation.
        1.  LEED/Energy Star a 5-year depreciation schedule.
        1.  Non energy star traditional depreciation.
        1.  Strengthen / tighten standards every year.

We'd see $billions more flowing into energy efficiency ASAP. Right now tax system favors using energy over investing to use less.

OT, but problem is, not enough qualified people want to take our place in Texas. But with you on that.

Of course our little piss poor annuity and worse, junk retiree health insurance,  has lead us to conserve more, but hey, whats wrong with that?  Glad to have the fixed benefit pension, glad to have had 6 healthy fun years pay back for all the years of being locked in a room with hormone laden teenagers. /snark

How long will the pension fund be viable? Rick Perry/Repugs been trying to tap it just like Congress has Social Security.

Barney Frank has good idea on reducing deficit and getting money for other needs:
