  •  Cops have always had "carte blanche" to pull you (11+ / 0-)

    over.  I was a long hair driving I-78 through NJ during the late 60's and would regularly be stopped by the NJSP.  Later, if you were a young male driving a van, you were sure to be pulled over because the NJSP was certain that you were carrying a ton of weed in the back.  NJSP has never really answer about profiling until that shot up that van full of young black me on the Turnpike some years ago and started being monitored by state and federal authorities.

      A friend who was a police chief in a small rural Iowa town told me that any officer should be able to think of 15 reasons to justify stopping anyone they want any time they want.

        I talked to one LA County sherriff and he maintained, with all the myriad traffic laws on the books, all he had to do was follow someone for 10 minutes and they were virtually guaranteed to violate some obscure traffic law.

        That's why totalitarians LIKE lots of laws: they'll find something that will stick.
