I don't do Facebook or Twitter or any of the other 'social networking' sites.  I don't have time to monitor Facebook's settings changes, and I really don't need my students or anyone else, for that matter, knowing everything I do.  There are enough times when I have no control over what information is available about me;  I don't need to 'volunteer' to have it broadcast to hell and back.

It's not based on Facebook. I'm on FB, but not any of the others (OK, LinkedIn, but barely). I have my privacy settings there pretty tightly locked down, and NONE of that information appeared on my Spokeo pages - OR or CA.

In fact, for the life of me I can't figure out where they got most of the crap - nearly all of it was wrong. I'm not a Leo. I don't own property in California, much less anything worth a million dollars. I'm not married - never have been. I do have a kid - but just one. (One profile said none, the other said two.)

And why couldn't they figure out that I was just one person?

Looks like a pretty crappily-executed attempt to troll through websites and public record databases. Maybe they pull from Facebook, too, but nothing came up from my page. (And I've been on longer than many.)

      •  I know that my spouses pictures are from facebook (6+ / 0-)

but they say they are pulling from 40 different sites. My privacy was set to friends only and nothing from facebook is listed under my profile. My spouse was set to everyone and there he is, in living color in pictures. But why they couldn't determine he is male, I don't know.

It does seem pretty cheap and thrown together. They have their little disclaimer that some info may be inaccurate, but it all seems pretty inaccurate in my book. Just crap on a page. I guess that is what a lot of the internet could be described as, just crap on a page.....

        •  Yeah - good description overall (4+ / 0-)

Just virtual crap on virtual pages.

There's stuff on mine that they couldn't have pulled from anywhere - it's not real. (Although if I do own a $1M home in California, that'd be good to know, I guess. I like my condo, like my landlord, but still...)

Maybe I should've explored further to see whom Spokeo's got me married to, also. Maybe my (nonexistent) spouse has that (nonexistent) $1M home.

they conflated you with someone with a similar name in CA, and another person with a similar name somewhere else?

Just wondering...I don't have the nerve to look myself up: don't want to announce my existence to them, just in case the sites I go to aren't among the 40 they troll....
