    There can be no question that securing the borders will also stem the flow of illegal immigrants, but criminals and immigrants are different populations.

    It seems there may be a useful path forward that begins with that understanding, as in --

    Control the borders to stop the thugs might be doable with one bill that makes people feel a little safer and elminates recriminations, while...

    A more deliberate and considered process attacks the actual problem of immigration and immigrants.

    I suspect the first will have to have some kind of temporary legal status that brings resident illegal within the law.
