  •  Today's satellite image (5+ / 0-)

There was one good satellite image today, from NASA's Aqua satellite:

I've adjusted the image levels to show greater detail in the slick.

Also, oil has apparently moved into the Chandeleur Sound. CNN may have a reporter on scene tonight on AC360, according to a blog post from their producer.

I did a diary, but then decided this is better left as a comment.

    •  How many tributaries is this endangering? (3+ / 0-)

      •  I don't know the number (3+ / 0-)

There are a lot of tributaries formed by the Mississippi River flowing into the Gulf,  and I suspect all of those are endangered.

While one expert, John Amos, has ascribed those black splotches just south of Mississippi's barrier islands and curving around the Chandeleur islands to turbidity and wind shadow, they look like accumulated oil from sheen to me. Perhaps the sheen collected in that area due to the wind, and then drifted a bit south over the past 24 hours due to run-off current when the wind abated.

Here's a closer shot of the area I mean, with the black splotch curling around into Chandeleur Sound.

According to video from CNN's team, there's a lot of oil just 100 meters off the island. Estimates of the slick's size aren't taking this northern area of the slick into account. If they did, the total area would be more than 9,000 square miles.
