  •  i think most of us are undertaxed, (0+ / 0-)

and none moreso than the wealthy.

there is no "normal" -- our circumstances have been continually changing over the past 100 years, making it impossible to talk about what is typical and what is not.

we have a ludicrously inflated economy, due largely to the need for the wealthy to continuously add to their own piles, while somehow keeping the rest of us from rioting. that "somehow" amounts to this: borrowing on our behalf, pocketing a third of what is borrowed, sending a third of what is borrowed overseas, and letting the final third slosh around in our empty economy, driving up housing costs and making it impossible for domestic manufacturing enterprises to thrive.

there is no single silver bullet that will save our butts. rather, what is required is a comprehensive program of socialist and pacifist policies:

    a. BRUTAL taxation on top incomes INCLUDING investment incomes.
    b. Single Payer health care, paid with by higher taxes on everybody.
    c. Repatriate our troops. Close ALL foreign bases.
    d. Abandon the drug war.
    e. nationalize energy infrastructure. force the development of renewable energy.
    f. invest in mass transit. (tax fossil fuels to pay for it)
    g. build/renovate schools. staff them.
    h. tax insecticides and herbicides, so as to
    i. tax disposable goods. BRUTALLY. anything that is sold with intend of being used once and discarded (without being actually consumed) should be taxed in 3-digit percentages.

basically, our market-based imperial economy is a horrifying grotesquery. we need to Dial. It. Back. on every front.

but we aren't going to -- not till most of us are reduced to clambering around in the landfills, looking for anything of value.

To put the torture behind us is, inevitably, to put it in front of us.
