  •  slight quibble (0+ / 0-)

not disagreeing on general principal--it's just that one mind in particular was open, to the best of my knowledge, for as long as I've been here. As of yesterday, though, it may be safe to assume that someone shut that mind with a crowbar...

    •  Slight quibble with slight quibble... (0+ / 0-)

I had numerous issues with the diary yesterday (and how it evolved from completely rational comments made in a previous diary), but...

religious fundamentalism does exist, and this diary does not acknowledge the history of the term.  In that respect, it's a bit disingenuous to imply that the original context of the term was merely an adherence to any generic set of principles or "fundamentals."

      •  That's fine (0+ / 0-)

this wasn't about the definition itself. I never did get a response as to why the diarist chose to, essentially, smear by association against a particular affiliation.

And I found that odd and unusual--hence my conclusion that the mind had been clubbed with a crowbar until it slammed shut...

there, it evolved to an attack on religious fundamentalism in general.

but lumping groups together like that--and then not having the stones to respond to requests for clarification--is a recipe for divisiveness.

That's all that was good for, and that diarist is the last person I ever expected it from.

            •  I was really surprised, too. And I do think that (0+ / 0-)

it's important that we acknowledge that our foreign policy does affect how we're perceived by our "enemies" and their retaliatory actions, regardless of how heinous they may be.

To blame terrorist attacks on "fundamentalism" without examining our own culpability is short-sighted at best, and arrogantly dangerous.

        •  it does nothing of the kind (0+ / 0-)

it claims a different, and I think more important, meaning for the word.

From my perspective, only someone who felt his ox was being gored would interpret it as attacking or belittling something specific.

In a comment I note that the association of the word with a particular religious viewpoint only dates back about 100 years, whereas the document about which I write predates that by more than additional 100 years.

But hey, react as you want.

do we still have a Republic and a Constitution if our elected officials will not stand up for them on our behalf?
